Relationships can be difficult.
Getting help shouldn’t be.

Domestic violence is a pattern of coercive, controlling behavior that can include emotional, psychological abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and/or financial abuse. It is the result of a person’s feeling of entitlement to have power and control over their partner or family member and their choice to use abusive behaviors to gain and maintain that.

Relationships, particularly unhealthy relationships, can be difficult to navigate. It’s not easy for anyone to understand why the person they love chooses to hurt them. Sometimes the hurt can be so subtle and gradual that it’s hard to notice the controlling tactics setting in. And sometimes the hurt is so pervasive that it simply becomes what we accept as “normal.”

CCADV’s 18 domestic violence member organizations provide critical services directly to survivors across Connecticut.

They are your local resource for ongoing support and advocacy. Some of the services they provide include counseling, court-based advocacy, support groups, children’s advocacy, emergency shelter and housing options, advocacy around basic needs, long term safety planning, and more.

They’ll be there to support and guide you as you navigate your relationship and the options that will increase your safety and well-being.

Safe Connect is a project of CCADV that seeks to provide a coordinated, statewide response to the needs of survivors.

Safe Connect advocates can assess your immediate needs, connect you with your local CCADV member organization for services, and make referrals to other community-based resources that may help.

It is also designed to increase accessibility of domestic violence services for communities of color and non-English speaking survivors who often face the greatest barriers to accessing help.

We have built a team of highly compassionate, bilingual, and multicultural individuals who are reflective of the communities we serve. If we don’t have someone on staff who speaks your language, we have the technology and resources available for real-time translation.

We’re working in partnership with
survivors to increase safety.

You can’t control your partner’s abusive behavior but you can take steps to protect yourself and your children from harm. Safety planning is the process of our advocates working in partnership with survivors to understand the situation from the survivor’s perspective and together creating a plan for safety and for moving forward in life.

All services are confidential, safe, free, and voluntary.

Common Questions

Yes! Services provided by Safe Connect and CCADV’s 18 domestic violence member organizations are completely free, confidential, safe, and voluntary.

That is absolutely okay! All services provided by Safe Connect and CCADV’s 18 domestic violence member organizations are voluntary, meaning you can stop engaging in services whenever you want and re-engage when you are ready.

Advocates who work for either Safe Connect or CCADV’s 18 domestic violence member organizations are bound by confidentiality per state and federal law and, except for mandatory reporting requirements described below, can only share information with your permission.

Because all of our advocates are mandated reporters, if you share that a child or a person with disabilities is being abused or neglected, or that you might hurt yourself or someone else, they are required to report this to protective or emergency services. In the event that this is necessary, advocates will work with you to ensure you have the continued support you need to navigate systems like child welfare.

Services provided by Safe Connect and CCADV’s 18 domestic violence member organizations are available to all domestic violence survivors regardless of their immigration status.

We may also be able to help get you connected to resources and supports regarding immigration services or special protections based on your immigration status.

If you call the police to report domestic violence and your partner says that you also injured them, police are required to make a determination about which one of you is the “dominant aggressor” or “the person who poses the most serious ongoing threat.” They are required to arrest the person who they determine is the dominant aggressor, but have the ability to also arrest anyone else who is determined to have committed a crime of domestic violence. If you are a victim of domestic violence who gets arrested as part of a dual arrest (meaning you and your partner were both arrested for domestic violence), our advocates will be able to help you navigate the legal system.

Safe Connect, Connecticut’s domestic violence information and resource line, is the entry point for domestic violence services in Connecticut. Advocates will ask you a few questions about what you’re experiencing and then they’ll get you connected to your local CCADV member organization for services.

Services are completely free, confidential, safe and voluntary – meaning you can change your mind at any time.
